The seafront in Rhyl and its beautiful but rundown Victorian buildings look set to get something of a makeover in the near future, with the local council now looking to transform the former Savoy hotel and amusement arcade.

Denbighshire Council has now agreed to purchase the Queens Arcade and an option to buy the Queens Market in the next three years, the North Wales Daily Post reports. Council leader Hugh Evans said the aim is for the site to provide a number of different uses in order to create a sustainable and economically successful town centre in the future.

He was quoted by the news source as saying: “These buildings are substantially vacant and in a poor state of repair and condition. The council wants to bring this critical element of the town centre back into productive economic use to provide new employment and business opportunities.

“Along with the investment the council is making on Rhyl’s waterfront, with the creation of the £15 million SC2 water park, we believe this will act as a primer to stimulate the private sector to undertake further investment in the town.”

Earlier this month (April), the Daily Post went to have a look at the SC2 West Parade site, with steel work now in evidence and groundworks fully completed.

Both wet and dry play facilities will be a feature inside, with one half a 1,200 sq/m water space including indoor and outdoor flume rides, a water play frame and slides, and sun lounge and outdoor splash areas.
