Making sure Flintshire’s cycle paths are kept clear and safe to encourage more people to head out on their bikes is not an easy job, which is why Lock Stock Self Storage is supporting a group of volunteers who do just that.

The North East Wales Cycle Path Volunteers, which are part of sustainable transport charity Sustrans, are kept busy looking after the region’s cycle paths between routes 5 and 568.

They keep their tools in a large container they bought from our self-storage company with the help of Flintshire Countryside Services, which is now kept at Wepre Park. This ensures their equipment is in a safe and secure location that they can all access, and it creates a good meeting place for those who volunteer their services.

Lock Stock director Nick Powell, who is also a keen cyclist, said: “The work the Sustrans group do in Flintshire is absolutely essential to keep cycle paths open and to encourage people to get out of their cars and lead healthier lifestyles.”

He went on to say cyclists would not “have so many lovely and safe cycling routes” without the help of the North East Wales Cycle Path Volunteers, led by Graham Harper from Northop.

Mr Powell added: “They’re making a real difference locally.”

Every fortnight, Graham and his fellow volunteers monitor the cycle paths, cut back overgrown brambles and trees, help build wildlife habitats, and collect litter that accumulates.

They also paint benches and path furniture, keep the signs maintained and accurate, clear leaves, plant bulbs, and often run Dr Bike sessions at schools to repair children’s bicycles and encourage youngsters to get out on their two wheels.
