Baseline Matters, a charity that works with adults with learning difficulties, has issued a call to arts and crafts enthusiasts to pass on their skills, with craft sessions set to be put on at the Wrexham-based shop.

The shop itself was set up by Denise Thomas, whose son has Asperger’s, with the organisation set to open a new site in Flintshire in 2021. To help it achieve its aims, it has also just taken on a second 40ft unit from North Wales-based storage company Lock Stock Self Storage, giving it plenty of secure space to work with.

Ms Thomas was inspired to set the charity up after discovering that there is a lack of services for young people with mental health conditions once they leave school.

She said: “In fact, it is not just young people who are not catered for, but adults of all ages with a range of issues and we try to provide them with the skills they need to help with their independence and communication within the community.

“Now we also want to extend our services by having craft sessions which would be open to all, and already we are holding some classes but we would be keen to offer more if we can find people to pass on their skills. We’d like to set up classes and community groups in needlework and knitting, crochet, needle felting and making Christmas cards, crafts and wreaths.”

Mike Trow, Lock Stock’s north-east Wales area site manager, explained that the company’s storage units are ideal for use by charities because they provide a huge amount of space in sealed and properly secure units.

Lock Stock has sites throughout North Wales, including Llandudno and Rhyl, as well as Flint, Chester, Denbigh, Mold, Wrexham, Newton in Powys, Oswestry and Shrewsbury in Shropshire.
