Llandudno’s historic pier has been named the best pier in Wales, and the third best pier in the UK in the 2017 Pier of the Year competition.
Run by the National Piers Society, this contest celebrates the UK’s best seaside structures and Llandudno pier has consistently performed well.
Speaking to the Daily Post, chairman of Llandudno Civic Society Nick Challinos described the result as “wonderful news”.
“If something suitable could be developed on the Pier Pavilion site then perhaps it could eventually win the competition,” he enthused.
This year, Hastings Pier took the top spot and was praised for the restoration work that has been undertaken there in recent years. Worthing Pier came in second.
Mr Challinos added that it’s been nice to see the current owner of Llandudno Pier Adam Williams spending some money on restoration, and praised the refurbishment of the kiosks in particular.
There is a flurry of renovation and regeneration happening in Llandudno at present. Last month, work began on the Tudno Castle Hotel site, which is set to be turned into a Premier Inn. A new pub and restaurant will also be created as part of the development.
However, proposals submitted early last month to build new apartments and restaurants on the Pier Pavilion site, have been rejected by the town council’s planning committee, the Daily Post reported at the end of March.
