The Shrewsbury Folk Festival returns in 2022 and has secured much of the line-up from the cancelled 2020 event, including the American folk singer songwriter, Galician piper Carlos Núñez, and Juno award winners Blackie and the Rodeo Kings from Canada.

The festival, which has just secured sponsorship from local businesses, is adopting a new format in 2022 following the success of this year’s outdoor stages with a combination of open-air stages and open sided marquees.

Festival director Sandra Surtees said: “We had overwhelmingly positive feedback about the atmosphere this year with the new stage layouts and having outdoor and covered venues was the most popular option with our audience.”

She added that she was very pleased that, at long last, they will be able to host American singer-songwriter Judy Collins and Carlos Núñez for the very first time, as they have been on the festival’s Wishlist for many years.

Other confirmed artists include Black Umfolosi from Zimbabwe, Stephen Fearing and The Sentimentals from Canada and Denmark, and solo shows from Canadian’s Colin Linden and Tom Wilson.

The Grammy-nominated all-women string band, Della Mae, from the US, will also be making its first visit to Shrewsbury, as will Moonlight Benjamin.

The festival has a history of bringing performers from all corners of the globe to Shrewsbury but a postponed festival in 2020 and travel restrictions in 2021 meant they had been unable to attend.

Tickets for the 2022 festival, which will take place at the West Midland Showground in Berwick Road from 26 to 29 August 2022, are now on sale on the festival’s website.
