Popular Christmas event The Lanterns will return this year and see Chester Zoo transformed into a festive wonderland.

The Liverpool Echo reports that The Lanterns, a nighttime exploration of the zoo, features colourful animal lanterns that allow visitors to view the zoo in a whole new light, and is accompanied by a range of festive features, colourful characters, and a visit from Father Christmas.

It takes visitors approximately an hour to complete their journey, which has become a popular tradition at the zoo, this year marking its tenth anniversary of the nighttime adventure, and there are a host of festive treats along the way.

The event did run in 2020 but implemented strict social distancing measures to protect staff and visitors. There is no word yet if there will be similar measures this year.

Chester Zoo announced its return on social media, saying: “The Lanterns at Chester Zoo is back for another magical year and is set to be as enchanting as ever. Join us as we transform the zoo into a spectacular wonderland, full of sparkle, illumination, and plenty of cheer!”

The Lanterns returns to Chester Zoo on Friday 12 November and runs until Thursday 23 December on selected dates.

The event will operate from 4 pm until 8.15 pm on each date, with timed tickets granting entry every fifteen minutes. Adult tickets start at £13, while children’s tickets begin at £11. Children aged two and under have free entry to the event.
