The 2021 Rhyl Airshow has been cancelled due to the pandemic, but organisers have promised that they will make up for it in 2022.

It is the second successive year that the event has had to be shelved because of the health situation, even though it is not due to take place until the weekend of 28th and 29th August. With concerns around the Indian variant of Coronavirus, organisers could not be sure everything will be open by then and said that it could not go ahead amid this “continuing uncertainty”.

Denbighshire Leisure Events, which organises the show, said: “public safety has to remain our top priority”. The good news, however, is that a “comeback spectacular” has been promised for 2022.

Commenting on the decision, managing director Jamie Groves said: “Despite the frustration of the current circumstances, our commitment to helping Rhyl grow its tourism economy remains a priority,” adding that there will be “exciting new offers” to attract people to Rhyl over the summer.

As well as new food and drink outlets and the reopened SC2 waterpark with a refurbished splash area, the new Ninja TAG Arena will be opening, helping Rhyl continue to develop as a “destination of choice”.

Denbighshire Council leader Hugh Evans commented: “We believe that even without the Airshow, Rhyl’s growth as a tourism destination will continue throughout 2021.”

The show, which would have been in its 12th year, won the “Best Crowd Puller Award” in 2019, when the Eurofighter Typhoon flew at the event. The Red Arrows were due to perform in 2018, but their display was cancelled due to bad weather.

Fans of the show can at least console themselves that 2022 could be the best edition yet, and dream of the sort of displays and aircraft that might be seen flying over the north Wales coast.
