What our customers say
A North Wales social enterprise has carried out over half a million pounds of repairs to the homes of the elderly and disabled and saved the NHS over £4 million in hospital stays this year. Now Conwy and Denbighshire Care and Repair/Gerddi Gwyrdd Home Improvement Service are geared up to help even more people after increasing their handyman vehicle fleet thanks to a contract vehicle hire deal with Denbigh-based van hire providers Take Stock. The St Asaph-based organisation is celebrating 25 years in business this year and, according to Chief Executive Lynda Cowell, is helping even more people than ever.
She said: “We provide advice and practical assistance to older people including repairs and adaptations to help them stay in their own homes rather than have to enter residential care or even spend time in hospital. We often work with Betsi Cadwaladr Health Board occupational therapists and with local authorities to enable older and vulnerable people to remain independent in their own homes in safety, comfort, warmth and security by installing anything from a simple hand rail to replacing a bathroom with a purpose-built wet room. We have carried out £586,000 of home repairs and adaptations this year and it’s estimated that will save seven times that amount in reduced social care and hospital bills and that adds up to £4.4 million.”
An increasing volume of work has meant Gerddi Gwyrdd Home Improvement Service has taken on an extra handyman to bring their team up to seven and they have also signed for a second van from Take Stock, the van hire arm of Denbigh-based Lock Stock Self Storage. Lynda added: “We needed to increase and update our van fleet to reach more clients and we wanted to use a local firm and Take Stock have been perfect partners and we plan to use them more in future. We cover a huge area, the whole of Conwy and Denbighshire, from Llanfairfechan in the west to Prestatyn in the east and from the North Wales Coast as far south as Llangollen and Corwen so it’s vital that we have dedicated transport we can rely on.”
Take Stock Manager Jeff Woods said: “We’re delighted to be able to help Care and Repair with the vital work they carry out - they’re a real social service and a lifeline for so many older people in North Wales. We are expanding our van hire business and forming partnerships like this is integral to that growth. Conwy and Denbighshire Care and Repair need smart, reliable vehicles which are fit for purpose and by hiring from one source they can achieve economies of scale while dealing with just one provider without having to worry about maintenance of their fleet. It means they can spread the cost and it gives them more flexibility and they don’t have to make a long term commitment to buying a vehicle which depreciates in value and performance.”
Lynda Cowell added: “We have a dedicated team here to provide a service for older people who live in their own homes and who are fiercely independent. They just need a bit of help to allow them to continue to live independent lives and that’s where we come in and our staff go that extra mile to give a fantastic service."
