Independent Traders Setup Shop In Shrewsbury Mall

When news of proposals to close and redevelop Shrewsbury’s Pride Hill shopping mall reached traders, there was certainly some disappointment, but now several have found a new home in a former QVC unit in the Darwin Shopping Centre, helping establish it as Shrewsbury’s premier retail destination.

The Shropshire Star reports that eight independent traders, including Sidney’s Café, Jennico, Val B’s Wax Jewellery, Heavenly Brides, Beauty & Nails Inbox, Tubeway Records, DVD Megastore, and Irehab, have made themselves at home in The Collective, the new name for the unit in the shopping centre.

Kevin Lockwood, Shrewsbury Shopping Centres manager, said: “Our vision is for the Darwin Centre’s retail mix to evolve into more of a community-led shopping centre with more regional and independent stores, whilst retaining some popular national brands.

“We’re really excited about The Collective, which will offer a unique destination for independent businesses.”

He hoped that with the end of the lockdown and with Christmas on the way, people will be encouraged to visit Darwin Shopping Centre and help support the many independent traders there while being able to shop safely.

Estaban Bridges from DVD Megastore said he was looking forward to opening his new unit in The Collective and welcoming back customers. He added that the year had been tough for retail, but was glad of the fresh start and new opportunities.

Steve Charmley, Shropshire Council’s Cabinet member for assets, economic growth and regeneration, said that Shrewsbury has a history of supporting independent and small businesses, which the council was trying to build on in the Darwin Shopping Centre.

“There is an increasing desire to support UK, regional and local businesses and we’re responding to this trend and helping small independent shops trade in the Darwin Centre by offering affordable and flexible terms in this new, attractive and well-designed space,” he said.
