The festive season is almost upon us, which means lots of fun nights out with family and friends, celebrating left, right and centre. But where to go?
If you’re local to Chester, then you’re in luck no matter what time of the year it is where fun and funky drinking spots are concerned - there’s always something for everyone. Here are just a couple of our favourite places to pop off for a tipple or two.
Found on Newgate Street, The Church is a very spacious venue indeed, perfect for anyone interested in drinking, dining and doing lots of dancing… with plenty of room for all in this stunning historic church building.
On the lookout for somewhere you can have a bit of a boogie with your pals? Then Alexander’s is the hippest hotspot for you, with bands galore taking to the stage, as well as other events like poetry, burlesque, theatre, comedy and a whole lot more. You can even hire the venue for your wedding if you like the look of it that much.
Every tipple imaginable can be found at The Botanist and they also run family-friendly events so everyone can have a good time, whether they’re underage or not. The space is available to hire for events, parties and drinks, with eating for up to ten people and the bar also runs ale or cocktail masterclasses, so you can learn a little something while you imbibe. If you remember it all in the morning is another thing altogether.
This fine establishment was listed as one of the Top 10 Whisky Pubs in the 2018 Good Pub Guide Awards, so if that’s your drink of choice make sure you add the Old Harkers Arms to the top of your must-visit list.
There’s also a circular walk from the pub that will take you along the Chester City Trail so you can have a good old explore before returning back to the watering hole for a well-earned pint or several.
Anyone looking for somewhere slightly quirky to drink could certainly do worse than Commonhall Street Social, famed for its outdoor terrace that has a BBQ, a ping-pong table and heaters (so good during the winter), but the interior is welcoming as well so it’s perfect for all seasons.
Liquor & Co
The drinks list here is extensive so you could easily spend an entire night here without much fuss and bother at all. It’s a warm and cosy interior that’s ideal for long winter nights out and about with friends - but you’d perhaps be wise to ask for the caretaker when you get there, if you believe the rumours about the secret bar tucked away somewhere on site.
