Businesses in Wrexham have voiced concerns that new council rules for car parks in the town centre haven’t gone far enough and won’t encourage shoppers to stay in the area for longer.
According to Leader Live, traders in the town’s market community believe that the only way to stop people from moving to locations like Broughton Shopping Park is to introduce a big reduction in parking charges.
Some of the changes brought in include an extra hour added to short-stay provisions, so people can enjoy a one to three-hour tariff for £1.80. yet some businessmen and women think minimum fees of £1 for an hour’s stay across all nine car parks in the town should be dropped to 50p so people – shoppers and traders alike – can plan shorter trips.
RKM Wool’s Lynsey Jervis commented: “Some of my customers go to Broughton and Shrewsbury now – there is nothing to come into Wrexham for and there is not enough footfall for shop owners like myself. If the parking was cheaper it would bring more people in.”
